The quick answer? Yes. You will save money, and help save the planet.
The longer answer? Still yes, but here’s why:
While solar panels are expensive, a do it yourself solar panel is significantly cheaper. It requires parts that are pretty easy to find, and some time. And for every array you have, the less power you need from the power company. This means less money spent on fossil fuels. This means a greener tomorrow.
Still not convinced? Then do this:
First, add up the number of kW of power you used all year. Divide this number by twelve. This is your monthly average.
Now divide the monthly average by 30. This is your daily kilowatts per hour average.
The average nationwide is 31.2 kWh. Divide this by the average number of hours of sunlight your area gets. Let’s say 7 hours (though likely it’s more in your area). That equals 4.45.
Multiply by 1.25 for waste and you get 5.56 or 5,560 watts a day. If you’re using panels that produce 180 watts, then 5,560 divided by 180 leaves you needing 31 solar panels.
The average price for store bought solar panels is 2 dollars a watt, meaning to completely go off grid would cost you 5,560 times 2 which is 11,120 dollars. That sounds like a lot, but there are government rebates and tax deductions for solar power, not to mention the increased value of your home. And you’ll never pay another electric bill again.
And our Planet stays a little greener.
